Sonakshi makes way for Kamal

Sonakshi had the offer to star in a south film with Kamal Haasan. Now she has signed on the dotted line agreeing to play the South superstar’s wife. She will sport two looks in the film — Indian and Western. She leaves later this month for a 45 day schedule to London. The film is said to be an Indian version of Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore’s Hannibal. To accommodate the film that takes off this month, she had to bow out off a few other projects. Her schedule is a mess right now, and she actress will now have to work overtime when she returns to Mumbai. The actress confirms, “I’m happy that an actor of his caliber has noticed my performance and wants me to share screen space with him. I've grown up watching films of his like Sadma, Ek Duje Ke Liye, Appu Raja and Chachi 420 and have immensely appreciated his performances. Things always manage to fall into place for me as has this. I landed up with this film during a break after the first schedule of Joker so it was all very convenient for me.”

Shahana’s a criminal?

Shahana Goswami has a penchant for finding roles that stand out and she is hoping that her character in Game, Tisha Khanna, will wow all. “It is a very different character that I’m playing. It’s grey. I play a crime reporter, who has wasted a lot of time in her life because of the unsettling past. She drinks too. Suddenly, she gets a call to cover a big scoop and gets drawn into the plot of the film. And then someone gets killed. Because of my traits, people might think that I’m incapable of killing someone but are they right? Do they know me? That’s the kind of thriller the film is and I love the twists and turns and the screenplay. The story really drew me to the film and I immediately said yes to it,” the acclaimed actor says. Meanwhile, she also reveals that she is a sucker for thrillers. “I have always loved the genre. It just grips me and gets me going and I have read a lot of them too.”

Actor Udita Goswami speaks about her Hollywood experience, moving bag and baggage to Los Angeles, Mohit Suri and much more

Now that you are back from Los Angeles, tell us how was the experience?
It’s been two days since I’m in India and trust me I already want to go back there. I had a wonderful time.

So was the trip productive in anyway? Absolutely. I was supposed to be there for 21 days but I ended up staying for two months. I had a lot of work lined up for me in India. But when I was invited to the Oscar week festivities, which is a big deal there, I decided to stay on. Honestly, I thought it is a once in a lifetime chance and I shouldn’t miss it. Thanks to my stay there, I met a lot of people from Hollywood, hired a manager, publicist and lawyer. So it was extremely productive.

So are you planning to shift base now? Yes. I have plans of going back there in August or September. I have done my groundwork. I’ve looked at places I could shift to and plan to take driving lessons. My secretary here almost wanted to kill me when I was delaying my return to Mumbai because I was having so much fun there. The only reason that I’m back in India is to work on my American accent.

Considering most of our top actors have failed to make a splash in Hollywood films, why are you willing to take such a risk?
For someone like me, who hardly does any work here, I think it’s a good idea to move to LA. The thing that works for me there is that I don’t look Indian. Here, this was my biggest disadvantage because my looks didn’t fall in the Vidya, Rani and Konkona bracket. The kind of roles that I have been offered in Hollywood is of the exotic variety. I could pass off as a Spanish woman according to them. Plus there aren’t many Indian roles happening in English movies. Since I don’t have the typical‘Indian beauty’ look and don’t have much work here, I don’t see the reason why I shouldn’t move there.

Back home, reportedly your ex Mohit Suri and Vishal Mahadkar came to blows over you. Mohit has blamed Vishal for his split with you. It’s very strange. I just got back two days ago and here I am reading about this in the papers. It is interesting to know that two men are fighting over me. But let anyone fight, I don’t care anymore.

Buzz has it that you have become very pally with actor Gerard Butler, who was rumored to be dating Priyanka Chopra? Why just Gerard? I’ve made friends with a lot of folks from Hollywood. I’m in touch with them constantly. I discovered that they are a lot sweeter and simpler than many of our B-Town people. Plus, I’m not into the name dropping game. You don’t go to a private party and micro-blog your pictures from there — with Gerard or any other celeb. It’s cheap and tacky.

Charity begins at home for Asin

Whatever her charitable activities are, actor Asin and her family maintain that they would rather be quiet about it. Asin had previously initiated an eye check-up camp in strife-torn Sri Lanka and also runs a school for the under-privileged in India.
"Asin has never really spoken about her charitable activities because she believes that these things are not an ideal way to grab headlines. So, even if she is doing something for the poor, she feels that she would rather not talk about it," says her father Joseph Thottumkal.

According to Joseph, Asin does believe in charity and turns to lend support to several organisations from time to time. "She believes in doing something for the poor and we are happy that she thinks that way. She has our full support. But we are happy about the fact that she chooses not to talk about it. It's a value that she treasures," her father adds. Asin has reportedly ear-marked a small portion of her income towards charitable causes, which is regularly sent towards the institutions that she backs.

'Yamla Pagla Deewana' sequel on: Bobby

After the stupendous success of comedy caper Yamla Pagla Deewana, actor Bobby Deol has revealed that work on the sequel to the film has started.
"We are definitely coming out with a sequel to the film, it's a dream for us to make a sequel but the work is still on so I can't say much about it. Meanwhile, I am just enjoying the success of the film," Bobby said at the launch of model-turned-actors Milind Soman and Rahul Dev's fitness and spa centre Breathe at South Extension in New Delhi on Friday.
The film saw all the three Deols Sunny, Bobby and their father veteran actor Dharmendra tickling audiences' funny bones with their impeccable comic timing.
Since Bobby was not well he made a brief appearance at the launch and left early. "I have not been keeping well for sometime but Rahul is a very good friend of mine and I had promised him that I would come. I didn't want to disappoint him, so I am here," Bobby said. Although Milind was missing from the launch, Rahul along with his younger brother actor Mukul Dev made sure that they attended all their guests personally.

Movie Review: Yeh Faasley

Movie: Yeh Faasley
Director: Yogesh Mittal
Rating: *1/2 (Review by Anupama Chopra)

Yeh Faasley is the torturously long and convoluted story of a young girl unravelling her mother's mysterious death.

Arunima, played by Tena Desae, returns home after a long stint in boarding school. Her father Devinder, played by Anupam Kher, is generous and loving but slowly Arunima discovers that his version of how her mother died isn't the whole truth. Devinder has hidden from Arunima many aspects of their troubled marriage - the two met in college and she, a Rajasthani princess fell in love with a "Jath-mazdoor," as he describes himself. Arunima begins to investigate and finds herself torn between her love for her father and her duty to her dead mother.

There is a sliver of a story here but director Yogesh Mittal has twisted and stretched it into a tale of mind-numbing foolishness and boredom. It feels like Mittal couldn't decide what he was making - a thriller, murder mystery or family drama - and so bunged in a bit of everything: we have the spooky hill station house where the incident happened; the scared servant who may or may not be telling the truth; another man - Pavan Malhotra posing as Rajasthani royalty - who may or may not have been in love with the mother. None of this is very interesting to begin with and the amateurish acting and direction only makes it worse.

Fine actors like Malhotra and Seema Biswas are wasted. Anupam Kher tries hard to portray the complexities of a man who is passionately in love with his wife and yet deeply insecure but he is also mostly reduced to screaming and curling back his lips.

And what can I say about the dialogue? At one point, Devinder says he hated his wife's passion for music because: hum mazdooron ko music se kya lena dena and at another, Kiran Kumar, playing his lawyer says: Ek ek jam baap beti ke pyar ke naam.

The tragedy is that Yeh Faasley isn't even unintentionally funny so it doesn't make the grade of so-bad-that-it's-good. It's just pure tedium. I'm going with one and a half stars.

Mallika's Oscar Red Carpet Boo-Boo

Mallika's eagerness to reach the Oscars red carpet early didn't pay off. The actress reached the world famous red carpet when there was no one around! Even most of the reporters, TV crews and photographers who capture the stars, had not reached.

The reason for Mallika's boo-boo was her eagerness to reach the venue ahead of time. "The invite read '3 pm onwards' but stars usually show up after 4 pm. In fact the television crews and photographers start putting up their paraphernalia only after 3 pm knowing fully well that the stars start descending around 4.30 pm," said a source. The Hisss  actress, however, arrived at 2.50 pm when only a few early reporters and photographers could capture her.

The source added: "Normally it takes at least an hour and a half for a star to walk the full carpet, pose for photographers, give bytes and be interviewed  till they reach the Kodak theatre. But Mallika completed the red carpet in just 30 minutes as there was hardly anyone around."

Mallika remained unavailable for comment but her brother Vikram Singh says, "Mallika has got coverage worldwide. She was there on the red carpet and at the after-party. She has been so busy with the Oscars that she has not had a chance to tell us what happened. She is expected back in Mumbai next week." While Mallika's manager said: "I am not aware of her reaching before time."

The source explained:  "This is the reason why her snapshots did not get splashed immediately after the event as only a few had clicked her. It was only later that her pictures did the rounds." Sources said that Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai who were also on the red carpet at the Oscars did not want a run-in with Mallika Sherawat. They had told their agents to make sure they weren't around at the same time as Mallika.

The Bachchans arrived on the scene only after 4.30 pm by that time the overzealous siren had already finished her walk.

It's official! Arbaaz Khan to direct Dabangg 2

Hi-Fi (Hindi Film Industry) actor-producer Arbaaz Khan, who has been on a high ever since his debut production Dabangg turned out to be a blockbuster, will now take the reigns as the director for the sequel of the masala action movie. Director Abhinav Kashyap, who helmed Dabangg, has decided against directing the sequel, for reasons unknown.
"Hey guys it true, I will be directing the sequel of Dabangg. Abhinav for some personal n professional reasons opted out (sic)," Arbaaz posted on his Twitter page Thursday. Arbaaz, who couldn't make it big as an actor thanks to flops like Daraar and Hello Brother, hit the gold with his first production venture. "Scripting has already started, the filming starts by early january. Start sound, camera, action. Inshallah Dabangg 2 will live up to all the expectations and be a huge blockbuster because of you all. God bless . Allah hafiz. Dabangg ho!," added the 43-year-old.

Rumours that Kashyap won't direct the Dabangg sequel began doing the rounds in November last year itself. At that time, Kashyap had denied the news, and told IANS: "This is just a rumour. I want to know if I am not making it, then who is making it? I even spoke to Arbaaz (Khan)...even he doesn't know from where these rumours are coming." It was speculated that either Arbaaz or his brother Sohail would be directing the movie, and the news has now turned out to be true.

Dabangg, starring Salman Khan and debutant Sonakshi Sinha, was the highest Hi-Fi grosser of 2010.

Reportedly, Scorsese will co-produce along with David Weisman. The film also stars Leonardo DiCaprio.

But when he comes in as the producer of the project, then I am thrilled as it takes the film to another level completely. Inshaallah, all goes well from here onwards. Fingers and all parts of the body crossed."

After many delays and glitches, the project is finally underway. A source told the tabloid, "The sheer logistics of merging two great film-making cultures seemed overwhelming, until a secret meeting took place on February 12 at last year's Berlin Film Festival between SRK, Leo, Martin, David, Paul and Karan Johar when Shah Rukh was in Berlin for the world premiere of My Name Is Khan and the H-Town actor-director duo were there for the premiere of their Shutter Island premiere the following night."

The meeting between the cinema stalwarts from differnt parts of the globe was a high-energy affair. The source added, "The meet-and-greet over coffee was simply intended to break the ice between the international artists who admired and respected each other's work. It quickly turned into a high-energy encounter. Topics of discussion included Scorsese's love for Hi-Fi cinema and the need for the preservation of its classic works." The Xtrme City screenplay was officially presented to SRK, Martin and DiCaprio. "Apparently, the camaraderie evolved from that event. The bonding between the superstars took everyone by surprise."
If all goes well, the dream Hi-Fi - Hollywood project will finally happen.

My Dad does not fight my battles: Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor has denied she is having ego problems with her 'Mausam' co-star Shahid Kapoor and that her actor father Anil Kapoor helped her iron out the differences.

The actress, who is shooting for Abbas Mustan's Players in New Zealand, says she does not need her father to fight her battles. "Shahid and I are both grownups. If we had problems we would sort them out without the involvement of our parents. My dad has never fought my battles," Sonam said.

Reacting to the controversy over her comments on Ranbir Kapoor on 'Koffe With Karan', Sonam maintains that she did not say anything nasty about her 'Saawariya' co-star. Ranbir's father Rishi was furious with Deepika and Sonam. "Imran and I are good friends and hopefully we will be doing a film together soon. I do not think that I said anything nasty about Ranbir. All I said was that I do not find him sexy and he said the same about me when Imran and Ranbir came to the show but it did not upset me," Sonam added.

Sonam has three films lined up for this year 'Thanku' with Akshay Kumar, 'Players' with Abhishek Bachchan and 'Mausam' with Shahid.

Where are the cat fights?

Guess who's actor Shilpa Shetty's new fan? Well, believe it or not, it is actor Katrina Kaif. Kat recently said that according to her, nobody in contemporary Hi-Fi (Hindi Film Industry) can beat Shilpa when it comes to dancing. The actor was recently fielding questions about who she thought was the best dancer in Hi-Fi. She replied, "In my opinion, Shilpa Shetty is the best dancer in Hi-Fi and when it comes to the heroes, I think it is undoubtedly Hrithik Roshan."

Later Katrina said that she's no match for Shilpa who, she says, can match any step that is given to her by the choreographer. "I don't consider myself a great dancer. I am okay (as a dancer). But if you ask me who's the greatest dancer in Hi-Fi then it has to be Helen aunty. She is extremely versatile and whenever I watch her dance I want the time to freeze," says Katrina.

Shilpa apparently even texted Katrina thanking her for her compliments. However, Shilpa has reserved her best compliments for actors Priyanka Chopra and R Madhavan. Never mind the poor box office verdict for PC's latest release, Shilpa recently saw the film and felt that PC has excelled in all departments. "Watched 7 Khoon Maaf last night. Well directed. Priyanka Chopra rocked. (It was) really complex role but you (Priyanka) did a great job effortlessly. You go girl. All the best," Shilpa tweeted.

However, actor Kangna Ranaut never found a mention when Shilpa tweeted about another recent release in which she stars. In her tweet Shilpa only mentions R Madhavan and the director. "She doesn't know Kangana that well. Maybe that is why she didn't mention her in her tweet," says a friend of Shilpa. But is it because of the cold vibes the two actors shared recently where Kangna didn't even come up and say a 'hi' to Shilpa? Well, no one can know for sure…

Bal Thackeray’s smitten by Madhubala!

Matoshree, residence to Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray resounded with a different noise. The usual roaring of the Tiger was replaced by the resonance of laughter as joviality marked the place, thanks to Rahul, son of Smita Thackeray who made his career choice in movies and the family went to seek blessings from the Thackeray patriarch. The Tiger was in his element as he rose to the occasion and blessed his grandson and the young team of his film Raada Rox, Rahul’s directorial debut in Marathi cinema. It was a pleasant sight to watch the Sena supremo joke, laugh and share anecdotes from his youthful days with a bemused audience, when he worked as a production assistant in the film industry.

“On one occasion while I was busy with my work, Madhubala happened to pass by me. I was dumbstruck and stared at her like a zombie. That one incident made my day and my work as an assistant worthwhile,” recalled the old man of Sena politics, amidst huge cheers and hoots. Balasaheb also gave some cinematic tips to his young grandson and asked him to focus on good editing, meaningful and witty visuals and most importantly audiences’ interest.

He also took the opportunity to take a jibe at youngsters’ fashion sense, mostly emphasising on the ‘long
locks’ look sported by guys today. The team later shifted to a suburban lounge for the music launch which was graced by Hi-Fi (Hindi Film Industry) diva Madhuri Dixit. If Balasaheb was a Madhubala fan, grandson Rahul grew up idolising the dhak dhak girl. He says about his idol. “I have always admired her sophistication and her attention to detail in her art. So, naturally I was struck when I first met her but the fact that she graced the function that begins my career was a dream come true. She’s a legend and who wouldn’t want to cast her?” admitted a smiling Rahul.

Just good friends?

Hi-Fi (Hindi Film Industry) watch out! The on-screen sparks between Jackky Bhagnani and Puja Gupta do seem too hot to handle in the promos of Vashu Bhagnani’s F.A.L.T.U. The shirtless boy and the sexy ex-Miss India are steaming it up onscreen and from what we gather, their off-screen chemistry too is terrific. The story goes that Jackky spotted Puja at a common friend’s party and asked her to audition for the part of his leading lady. The actor admits that she fits the bill perfectly.

But, while Jackky refuses to take credit for her presence in his film, Puja gushes, “I’m in F.A.L.T.U because of him!” Wait, we also heard that the actress wasn’t too happy about the share of attention Jackky was getting as compared to her. “I would say it should be Jack (as she fondly calls him) who should be feeling jealous of me,” Puja laughs and adds, “I was the only girl on the sets and Vashuji was very partial towards me.” Looks like the gal doesn’t want to hear anything against her costar, which makes us wonder what’s cooking between the two!

“We’re just good friends,” Jackky says. “We enjoy each other’s company and often hang out together after work but that’s all.” Puja admits that people have already started linking them but as long as she and her family know the truth, the grapevine buzz doesn’t matter. “I’ve found my best friend in Jackky and I won’t let rumours spoil this friendship,” she states firmly. Let the buzz continue. We’ll leave the audience to give their take on this screen couple’s terrific chemistry when the film hits the theatres on April 1!

Rahman fails to win Oscar

A.R. Rahman performs 'If I Rise' at 83rd Academy Awards
A. R. Rahman failed to recreate his ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Oscar magic this year, losing out in the Best Original Score and Best Song categories at the 83rd Academy Awards here on Monday.
Indian hopes were further dashed when NRI editor Tariq Anwar failed to bag the Best Film Editing trophy for the British drama ‘The King’s Speech’, which went to Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter of ‘The Social Network’.
Rahman, dressed in a black sherwani, performed his nominated track ‘If I Rise’ from the Danny Boyle film ‘127 Hours’ with British popstar Florence Welch to much applause. But the 45-year-old lost the Best Song trophy to Randy Newman who won for his composition ‘We Belong Together’ from ‘Toy Story’ 3. The golden statuette for the Best Original Score went to composer duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross who won for their soundtrack in ‘The Social Network’.
Rahman was hoping to repeat his golden run at the 2009 Oscars, where he won two statuettes for his music in another of Boyle’s film, the Mumbai based potboiler ’Slumdog Millionaire’. The ‘Mozart of Madras’ missed the golden trophy last year too, after his song ‘Na Na’ (from ‘Couple’s Retreat’) failed to get a nomination despite being in the long list for the ‘Best Song’ category.
Earlier this year, the ‘Jai Ho’ hitmaker had lost out on a Golden Globe for Best Score to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, but won a Critics Choice award for the “haunting tracks” and “wonderful crescendos” of ‘127 Hours’. Rahman had won a BAFTA nomination for the same, but had lost the trophy to Alexandre Desplat, who won for his score in ‘The King’s Speech’.
Rahman, who was honoured with a Padma Bhushan last year, had also enjoyed a golden run at the 52nd Grammy Awards, where he had again bagged two gramophones for his music in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

Bipasha on being accused of child labour

Hi-Fi (Hindi Film Industry) damsel Bipasha Basu landed herself in a big trouble when she posted a picture of two children tying her shoelaces and tweeted, "I need to learn to tie shoe laces ASAP! Embarrassed that I can't! No patience grrrrr! Promise I am not spoilt! Will learn soon."

This news spread like a fire and people started accusing the actor of child labour. "Bipasha should be arrested for this act. Only then these film studios will not do any child labour," posted a follower. Another tweet read, "Disgraceful Bips - cannot believe you are dumb enough to add this photo on Twitter!"
Bips later deleted the picture and justified the act by saying, "Well the ppl helping me in the pix r my friend n sister, Who I help often with the same! So am sorry if it hurt anyones sentiments! (sic)"

But her fans didn't buy this explanation. In the deleted tweet she confessed she doesn't know how to tie laces and in her explanation she stated she does the same (tie laces) for the children in the pic.

Bipasha was in the capital for an event. When quizzed about the twitter controversy, she stated, "I think you should read my post on twitter. It's not child labour, that's all I can say."
